Background

It took months to find the actor to play the role of Artie.[1] For his role in The Boys are Back, McAnulty was chosen from almost 1000 hopefuls for the role. The film's casting director Nikki Barrett called McAnulty "a small force of nature". "When he came to meet Scott Hicks for the first time, he just marched into the room, plonked himself down beside Scott, and started chatting, completely at ease," she said.

Reception

The Mosman Daily reported on the film's screening at the Toronto Film Festival, writing that viewers "loved the rawness of newcomer Nicholas McAnulty."[1] Jenelle Riley of Back Stage made note that McAnulty "shines in "The Boys Are Back" ".[2] Clive Owen spoke about how his own being a parent was reflected in his work with McAnulty, offering that he felt a bit of trepidation about working in a film with children, and that "playing opposite 6-year-old Nicholas McAnulty turned out to be something of a revelation.".[3]
